GUAM -- GUAM (April 30, 2007) – Marines and Sailors from the 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit participated in a community relations project April 30 during a routine port visit to Guam.
Nearly 20 members of the 13th MEU and Bonhomme Richard Strike Group pitched in at a local government center during the second of two projects, planting trees and building a fence for a rest area.
Mr. Pete Borja, village mayor, pitched in the construction activities, and praised the effort as a great way for everyone to “get to know each other.”
Following the completion of the projects, Marines and Sailors were invited to enjoy a fiesta, featuring barbecued ribs, chicken, rice and salad.
On the ride back to the pier, service members were driven to a local historical spot to observe a World War II battle ground.
As the 13th MEU presses on during WESTPAC 07-1, the mission is still uncertain. Friends of democracy, however, can be rest assured the Fighting 13th is on their side. And always willing to lend a hand.
Religious Program Specialist 2nd Class Miljonas R. Castro, 13th MEU Chaplains Assistant, speaks with local media on Guam about the day's Community Relations Project. Castro and members of the Bonhomme Richard Religious Program are responsible for coordinating Community Relations Projects well before the unit arrives in port.
Members of the 13th MEU and Bonhomme Richard Strike Group erect a fence at a future rest area near the village Mayor's office. During the project, which was the second of two Community Relations projects, Marines and Sailors made several beautifications to the area, including planting trees, general landscaping, and the construction of a fence.
Marines and Sailors participating in the Community Relations Project April 30 were invited to enjoy an afternoon barbecue at the Mayor's request. During the meal, the Mayor, Mr. Pete Borja, gave thanks for the assistance of the service members and ask that we all reflect on the accomplishment of friendship.
