A U.S. Marine with Battalion Landing Team 2/1, 13th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), shields himself from the debris of a landing U.S. Marine Corps CH-53 helicopter after completion of a simulated mission to secure an airfield, local village and provide aid to refugees during Certificate Exercise (CERTEX) at San Clemente Island, California, Dec. 7, 2015. CERTEX is the final evaluation period of the 13th MEU and Boxer Amphibious Ready Group prior to deployment and is intended to certify their readiness to conduct integrated missions across the full spectrum of military operations.
